Maintenance Requirements

Maintenance Requirements
Daily (by owner)
- Ensure that no water leaks are evident around the outside of the water heater, the pressure relief valve, or from the installer-supplied plumbing connections.
- Inspect the air intake and exhaust terminations on the exterior of the home, and ensure they are unobstructed by snow, ice, shrubs, or any other material.
- Visually inspect the exterior of the water heater and the vent piping for signs of discoloration or physical damage.
If any water leaks, discoloration or physical damage are found during visual inspection, please shut off the power, gas, and water supplies to the water heater and contact your installer or a qualified service person immediately. Do not attempt to remove the front cover yourself!
Every 400 Operation Hours Or 25,000 Cycles (qualified service person)
- Inspect and clean the inlet water filter.
- Inspect heat exchanger for soot, water leaks, or compromised seals.
- Descale the heat exchanger (especially in areas with high mineral content in the water).
Annually (qualified service person)
- Inspect exhaust venting and air intake piping for blockages or damage.
- Inspect heat exchanger for soot, water leaks, or compromised seals.
- Inspect burner for damage or blockages (see Burner Removal Video).
- Inspect the pressure relief valve for leaks and test for correct operation.
- Inspect and clean the inlet water filter.
- Inspect the condensate trap for leaks, blockages, or damage.
- Check and clean the spark/flame sensor electrodes.
- Inspect and clean the air filter that is mounted on the front of the fan.
- Descale the heat exchanger (especially in areas with high mineral content in the water).
If the inspections reveal any damaged components, they must be replaced prior to placing the water heater back into operation.

- Check that the backdraft flapper inside the exhaust collar is moving freely.
- Check the sight glass located in the lower-right corner of the copper heat exchanger to ensure that there are no cracks in the glass or damage to its gasket. In addition, look at the burner flames through the sight glass when the water heater is running to ensure that the flames are steady and blue.
- Check and clean the spark/flame sensor electrodes. Refer to this service bulletin for directions: Cleaning The Electrodes (PDF 1.2 MB)
- Manually operate the pressure relief valve (located in the plumbing below the water heater) to ensure that it opens and water comes out.
- Ensure that the small mesh filter screen that is located inside the brass cold water connector is clean and undamaged.
- Prevent lime scale build up by carrying out a descaling flush with white vinegar. Refer to this service bulletin for directions: Descaling Heat Exchanger (PDF 1.0 MB)
- Remove the exhaust vent hood inside the water heater and inspect the top of the copper heat exchanger for soot or debris clogging up the fins.
If the inspections reveal any damaged components, they must be replaced prior to placing the water heater back into operation.

Every Two Years (qualified service person)
- Inspect the heat exchanger fins for damage, blockages, or soot build up. Clean if necessary.
- Lubricate the water valve pushrod assembly.
Every Three To Five Years (qualified service person)
- Completely rebuild the water valve (refer to manual for details).
- Clean the pilot tube and clean or replace the orifice. Refer to this service bulletin for directions: Cleaning & Replacing The Pilot Assembly (PDF 0.3 MB)
If the inspections reveal any damaged components, they must be replaced prior to placing the water heater back into operation.
