Connectivity—the idea of integrating HVAC products with software platforms, such as apps and smart thermostats—has swept the industry.

Goncalo Costa, head of the AC Regional Business Unit – North America, shares insights into Bosch solutions and what’s driving the desire to connect.

Q: How did connectivity become an HVAC industry trend?

A: Our market research shows that customers and end users are increasingly interested in being able to remotely interact with and monitor the performance of their equipment. Connectivity is a trend not just in the HVAC industry, but in our lives. We have access to so much at our fingertips on our phones and have come to highly value speed and convenience.

Q: What are some advantages of connected products?

A: At Bosch, we believe there are several benefits. Since we design heat pumps as well as smart thermostats, we can ensure seamless integration and connectivity between our products. Contractors who use our apps can benefit from this in a number of ways: for instance, determining if there is an error code in the air conditioning, or if the unit is operating in a limited condition.

Really, connectivity is a win-win for everyone. It gives contractors a convenient way to register and install products. End users get substantial control over their home comfort and energy usage--they can interact with their HVAC units, anytime and anywhere.

Q: Who is driving this market trend?

A: We see the demand coming largely from a younger generation of contractors now joining the market. To better understand how we can fully support these customers, our market research team conducted an extended User Experience Initiative, involving several interviews and field tests.

Based on our research, younger contractors tend to prefer to access product and installation information on-demand from their mobile devices if possible. They also like having the ability to gauge the unit’s performance remotely after the installation.

Q: Do concerns about environmental impact also play a role?

A: Yes, homeowners are increasingly concerned about saving energy and money and in improving their carbon footprint. Connected HVAC systems allow them to keep better track of their energy usage and adjust on-demand as needed.

Q: What's next?

A: In my opinion, connectivity as a market trend will continue to grow. It isn’t technology just for technology’s sake—it can actually help make the installation and registration process easier for contractors and provide better, more sustainable comfort for end users.
