Indirect Hot Water Tanks Maintenance Information

The maintenance steps below, and how to conduct them, are covered in the manual that came with your indirect tank and must be referred to prior to engaging in any work! Maintenance Requirements Daily (by owner)

• Ensure that no water leaks are evident around the outside of the water heater tank, the pressure relief valve, the drain fitting, or from the installer-supplied plumbing connections.
• Visually inspect the exterior of the water heater tank for signs of discoloration or physical damage.
  If any water leaks, discoloration or physical damage are found during visual inspection, please shut off the supply and return valves in the plumbing to and from the water and contact your installer or a qualified service person immediately. Do not attempt to resolve the situation yourself!

Every Two Years (qualified service person)

• Test the pressure relief valve operation. If the valve fails to operate correctly, it must be replaced with a new (properly rated) valve before the water heater is put back into operation.
• Drain the tank, remove the inspection plug, and inspect the interior for debris and scale build up. Use thermal shock to remove any build up, then flush the debris away with fresh water.
• Remove and inspect the anode rod*. If it is corroded, pitted, or the diameter is 1/2in or less, it MUST be replaced immediately. Refer to this service bulletin for directions: Anode Rod Inspection (PDF 0.4 MB)

*Important Note! This must be done annually in hard water areas.

If the inspections reveal any damaged components, they must be replaced prior to placing the water heater back into operation.
